Abraxas Market admins say that they’ve suffered a major DDoS attack and that they’ll be back and up as soon as possible.

Those of you uninformed should know that Abraxas Market has been down since Friday, November 6th which has been the subject of wide speculation among users.

Customers having their bitcoins in escrow are most worried about the situation, but whether it’s an exit scam (most likely) or some sort of an attack, perhaps DDoS attack, it’s not yet clear.

Your TOR usage is being watched

For those of you not familiar with Abraxas Market, it is a Darknet Market on the Tor network that is mainly oriented to selling illicit drugs and there were virtually hundreds of drug related listings, mainly selling pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

The accepted payment method is bitcoins and it also featured escrow services.

For the last week or so, users have been in turmoil especially since not a word came from the Abraxas Market admins.

A few days ago however, a user BoxersCompany has posted on Reddit something that could be taken as an official statement in which, allegedly, Abraxas Market admins say that they’ve suffered a major DDoS attack and that they’ll be back and up as soon as possible.

“AS YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF MARKETS WERE SUFFERING MASSIVE DDOS ATTACKS. DID I ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION? IF NOT THEN GOOGLE WORD – DDOS ATTACK AND FIND A DEFINITION FOR THAT. WE’LL BE BACK SOON. ABOUT – WHY WE DON’T LET PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT OUR DOWNTIME IN REDDIT FORUMS, WE DON’T HAVE TIME TO DO SO. IDIOTS WILL CRY AND DIE SMART ONES WILL KEEP QUIET SO BE HAPPY THAT I FOUND TIME TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION. ABRAXAS TEAM MATE.”

Many of the users are still not convinced saying that the message is not signed; while others are more inclined to “believe in miracles” as they say.

Silk Road Gone, But Dark Net Drugs Trade Stronger Than Ever

Many users consider this situation with Abraxas Market quite symptomatic in a way, given that only a few days ago, Abraxas Market has been considered the biggest market on the Dark Web.

In this light, it may be reasonable to actually believe in the possibility of DDoS attack.

(DDoS attack “ordered” by another Darknet Market, perhaps?! It has happened before with Mr. Nice Guy paying an extortionist to DDoS other Darknet Markets including Agora).

Let me be clear though, it looks 99% sure it was an Exit Scam.

The new leader in the race to be the number 1 Darknet Market is AlphaBay which has recently boasted of their 200,000 users which separated them from the rest of the markets on the Dark Web.

It was the first time on the Dark Web that a market was so open about their numbers and many users took this against them.

Most of them continued to lament over Agora’s shutdown saying mocking the PR campaign that AlphaBay is apparently conducting and praising the clean, clear and straightforward way of running a business of Agora marketplace.

Some other noticeable markets gaining traction is Dream Market and Silk Road 3.

They have been quietly gong along quietly and steadily increasing.

After all, the Dark Web markets are in a constant race to take the first place after the legendary Silk Road market was shut down in 2013 by the FBI.

For about 2 years the greatest contender for the throne was Agora marketplace and it accumulated a huge and rather loyal community.

For about 2 years the greatest contender for the throne was Agora marketplace and it accumulated a huge and rather loyal community.

But, then at one point – it was brought down, allegedly by its own admins explaining that they’ve found a glitch in the security system and that after they’ve fixed it, they’ll be back. Agora marketplace

Agora marketplace is however, still down; some users managed to withdraw their bitcoins, some still haven’t; and so more and more people are starting to believe that the second most popular marketplace after Silk Road have also performed the exit scam.

What’s different in these two similar situations is that Agora marketplace notified its users of its downtime beforehand and left a window open for users to withdraw the bitcoins. It seems that Abraxas Market didn’t have such an opportunity, considering their very sudden shutdown. It irresistibly reminds of the DDoS attack catching them by surprise! The tone of the message (notice – all in caps!) provided by BoxersCompany on Reddit certainly indicate the same.

One user remarked that these things are not unusual – Agora marketplace went down like this all the time, noting that they were however slightly “better communicators.”

Anyway, without the additional information from Abraxas Market admins or its users to keep us posted, it’s all down to time to see how the situation will develop. Care to guess?!
